Witness Statement Template

Witness statement template is used to record personal witness statements, either by the individual itself or by law enforcement agencies. The speech that is uttered by the witnesses of a crime scene to describe the events that unfolded during the incident is called a witness statement. This statement can be in the form of a video, document, or a voice recording. It is later presented in court as evidence where the judge and jury read/listen to it. Mostly, it is the job of the police department to ask the witnesses to give their statements about the event. Witness statements are taken from every single person that was present at that incident and saw the event with their own eyes. Which is then used as the key to solving the case and finding the criminal.

How is a Witness Statement Conducted?

The crime officials may conduct individual investigations with each witness and ask them to write down the statement or orally explain the scenario. In this process, the witnesses are always informed that their recording or statement will be used in the court room in the future, and they might be asked to present themselves in the courtroom to provide confirmation of their statement. The witness statement template always includes general information about the crime at the beginning of the paper. This includes; crime, witness name and their contact information and the officials dealing with the crime.

The crime officials or the police officer usually asks the witness general questions such as the time when the crime unfolded, the day, the people they saw, their prediction of the suspect, and anything suspicious they noticed before or after the crime. The police then takes their contact information and lets them know that they will be contacted in the future if they have any further queries. Another important thing that is required on the witness statement is your signature or thumb print. This is done so that the witness can not change their statement later on in the court room. Additionally, the witness is provided with the contact information of the officer in charge of the case if they want to add something to their statement. Or if they get in contact with the suspect and need to notify the police right away to help with the case.

Why a Witness Statement is Necessary?

A witness statement template is a crucial part of any crime case as it allows the officials and the jury to detect the suspect. It acts as a lead for the police officers to find the actual criminal. Hence, it is the first step taken by the police officers to solve any case. Without the witness statement, the police officers will be lost and have no direction to follow. Secondly, when the case and possible suspects are found and taken to court, the judge requires evidence for the blame on each suspect. Which is provided to the judge in the form of witness statement. After listening/reading the witness statements the judge and jury take their time, decipher the root cause of the crime, find the criminal, and sentence them their punishment.
